Lyman E. Knapp papers, 1862-1887.

The collection includes Knapp's commission as Captain of Company I, 16th Regiment, dated Sept. 20, 1862; his commission as Captain of Company F, 17th Regiment, dated April 9, 1864; his commission as Major of the same company, dated November 1, 1864; and his commission as Lieutenant Colonel in the 17th Regiment, dated December 10, 1864. The collection also includes one photograph and one engraved portrait of Knapp. Also included in the collection is a manuscript/typescript of a 1887 Memorial Day address given by Knapp and a photocopy of Knapp's undated notes relating to the Battle of the Crater at Petersburg. The collection includes a folder of secondary information about Knapp's life. Included in this folder are a genealogical summary of the Knapp family back to the 1600s, several biographical sketches and an obituary.

Lyman Enos Knapp was the third territorial governor of Alaska from 1889-1893, in Sitka. He was born in Somerset, VT, Nov. 5, 1837. He graduated from Middlebury College in 1862 and fought in the Civil War. After the war he edited the Middlebury Register for 13 years. He was admitted to the Vermont bar in 1876, and received an M.A. and L.L.D. from Whitman College in 1893. Knapp was probate judge in Addison County, VT, 1879-1889.
